What's Inside that Case Henry Opens in the Hit Series?
For much of the concluding season of the popular Netflix show, the young Holly Wheeler and Max are imprisoned in a realm of memories built from the recollections of Henry Creel. Their quest for freedom in "Escape from Camazotz" has them relive a traumatic incident from Henry's childhood—a moment that potentially carries the means to overcome him for good.

A Journey Into the Mine Shaft
Upon meeting Max in the world called Camazotz, it becomes clear she is sheltering in a chamber that Henry avoids at all costs. By leaving the lens cap on a telescope found in Henry's old home lets Holly see that the danger lies not within the cave. By aligning her view through the cap, she and Max plummet into a subterranean passage.
They watch a young, eight-year-old Henry find an injured and paranoid man. As the boy offers aid, the man reacts violently, hitting him in the hand. Fighting for his life, Henry ends the threat with a rock. "Was this the turning point?" Holly asks tearfully. Essentially, yes, but the act involved more than a fight for life.

An Interdimensional Incident and Stolen Research
This backstory explains the 1943 event, which reportedly teleported a U.S. Navy ship into a realm later called the Abyss. The ship was attacked, and the lone returnee was the captain, who returned in a vegetative state with an altered blood type.
That survivor's offspring, the future Dr. Brenner, attempted to recreate this phenomenon in remote Nevada. However, a treacherous employee pilfered lab samples to sell to the Russian agents, who were eager to begin their own interdimensional projects. The man in the tunnel was that very thief.
Unlocking the Mystery
Based on what is revealed about Brenner's work, the container would assuredly have some of the unique blood type. At that moment, Henry is wounded and bleeding. Exposure likely occurred upon opening the case, causing the awakening of his powers—traits he would later pass on to the test subjects Brenner would experiment on.
Alternatively, the case could have held exotic matter that was destined to travel to Hawkins Laboratory, where it acts to anchor the mirror dimension. The prequel shows that Henry ended up in the Abyss, reappearing 12 hours later with a new blood type and personality. From then on, he fights the influence of a malevolent force, much like how Will was controlled by the entity in season 2.
The Power of Fear
The reason Henry avoids the cave of that cave demonstrates how utterly horrifying the event was for him. Even as he controls the collective consciousness and attempts to pull the Abyss into Hawkins, a fragment of his psyche still exists. The villain weaponizes terror, and the narrative points to a final confrontation between him and Will, who has confronted his greatest terrors to gain strength.
His confrontation has effectively disarmed Vecna. More importantly, Will now knows what his enemy truly fears, which could provide a critical advantage in the ultimate battle that awaits.
