The Showrunner Shares He Has an Idea of How Pluribus Might Finish... Currently.

The creative mastermind could not have predicted that the Apple TV+ show would emerge as a massive hit. “God bless the fans,” he states. “I was surprised by the show being as widely discussed as it is, and it makes me overjoyed.”

As the debut season of the popular sci-fi show reaching its finale—and Season 2 greenlit and underway—Gilligan and his team opened up about the audience reaction and whether it will impact the future direction of Pluribus.

About the Tremendous Fan Response

One could easily to get sidetracked by the rampant praise and audience predictions surrounding Pluribus. The creator is making a conscious effort to avoid both.

“It feels like constantly eating your favorite dessert and being in a state of bliss,” he says. “It's the greatest thing, but I get wind of it anecdotally, and that's on purpose. I have never Googled myself, nor do I ever plan to. Not because I don't care. It's a bottomless pit I know I would disappear down and then I'd be never leaving the house from Home Depot and I'd be stuck in my living room.”

In spite of his concerted efforts, there’s it's impossible to ignore the extremely enthusiastic response to the series. The most practical strategy is to take it in stride and try not to let it alter the course of the show.

“We don't try to adjust our writing,” says Alison Tatlock. “The narrative we craft is not changed by audience chatter.”

“It's wiser to keep our heads down and working,” he chimes in.

A Pressing Query: Does the creator See the Conclusion of Pluribus?

So if the creative staff aren't taking cues by audience theories, can we assume they already know how Pluribus will finally conclude? The answer is yes… sort of.

“We've developed some compelling concepts about where the show might end up,” Gilligan says. “but we are always ready to throw out a decent plan for a more brilliant plan. That philosophy has guided us in excellent shape on Better Call Saul and on Breaking Bad even before that. We throw stuff out when we find a more perfect path and I expect we'll continue doing that.”

Then again, if plans fall through, executive producer Gordon Smith has a rather amusing idea to serve as a last resort.

“I constantly suggest that the entire story is inside a snow globe, and that we'll pull back at the end and that's where they've been all along,” Smith jokes, “though the idea hasn't gained traction.”

Of course, one could always use the iconic TV endings?

“My dream is Carol to wake up in bed next to Bob Newhart,” Gilligan adds, smiling.

Pluribus is streaming now on the streaming service.
