The Latest Casual Game Mode Sparks Intense Discussions Regarding Bots, Experience Points, and Wait Times
Over the weekend, Battlefield Studios introduced a new playlist called Casual Breakthrough. In essence, this mode resembles the standard Breakthrough setup but features several key changes:
- Each team has just eight human participants, with the remaining filled by 32 bots.
- Activities performed by human gamers award full XP, while bot actions provide lower rewards.
- Just a pair of maps can be played: Siege of Cairo and Empire State map.
- Elements like Dogtags, accolades, and stat tracking are disabled.
So essentially, this mode lives up to its name: it offers a casual take of Breakthrough. At face value, one could assume it's a good idea, as it gives more options for players looking for alternative ways to enjoy the game. But, if video games have taught us anything, it is that you can't please everyone. Which is to say, a lot of BF6 fans are mad.
Player Responses: Anger to Praise
"Gamers prefer human opponents. Don't repeat the mistakes of your competitors," states a response to the mode reveal. "Truly disappointing concept," says a different user. At the same time, on the Battlefield subreddit, a player notes, "I have no idea where we are going with this title," while someone else details all the issues they believe to be problematic in Battlefield 6: "Fix bugs, address drone issues, correct rocket mechanics, fix [the] bloom after sprinting bug, fix awful hit registration. We do not require this bot mode."
However, for every complaint, some gamers explaining how much they're enjoying the recent addition. "It's very fun to warm up, human participants keep it from being a total farmfest but it's very relaxed," says a forum post. "The community doesn't understand that there are players who actually go outside and can't play this title all the time. Let them find a middle ground," states another. A response on Twitter clarifies that as they're "a battledad with busy schedules, this is perfect for me," while another applauds the mode for "not being overcompetitive."
Constructive Criticisms and Community Input
All that said, there are valid points to criticize Casual Breakthrough. A few folks have highlighted that it will make queue times more extended for different playlists because of the sheer number of playlists currently available. On a similar note, certain regions often face AI-filled matches in the current modes. It also seems somewhat counterintuitive that the mode won't start without a minimum number of human gamers, despite it focuses mostly on combat against bots.
Finally, one of the biggest complaints is that a previous feature was meant to offer complete rewards, including AI matches, but that got canned when they tried to remove XP farming from the system. Thus Casual Breakthrough feels like the community compromising halfway, as per forum feedback. Another labels this mode as the devs "making a mistake so hard, I experienced great enjoyment in the initial release, what prompted them to change it?"
Looking Ahead: Adjustments Occur?
Should Battlefield Studios has demonstrated something so far with the latest installment, it's that they're listening and responding to feedback. Assignments that were overly hard were adjusted very quickly, just like the specific battle pass objectives. It is likely that, if their data shows this recent mode is underperforming to their standards, they won't be shy to change it again.
