The Details Known About the Those Lost of the Bondi Beach Terror Attack

No fewer than 16 people lost their lives and in excess of 40 were hurt when assailants fired on a Hanukah event at Bondi Beach, an incident local authorities are describing as a act of terrorism.

As of the newest reports, officials have stated the death toll stands at 16, including one of the suspected gunmen. Moreover, 42 wounded individuals were transported to medical facilities.

The victims are still awaiting formally identified, but investigators think their ages span between 10 and 87 years of age.

Eli Schlanger

London-born rabbi Eli Schlanger, 41, was the first victim to be named.

Described as a father-of-five, he served as the associate rabbi at Chabad of Bondi. Family members and friends spoke of him as “vivacious, energetic, full of life and a very warm outgoing person who was dedicated to assisting others”.

“How can a happy rabbi who went to a beach to share joy and positivity, to make the world a better place, lose his life in this way?” a family member said.

Schlanger and his wife had recently celebrated the birth of their youngest child just a few months ago.

Alexander Kleytman

Alexander Kleytman was also confirmed among the deceased, according to his wife.

She recounted the moments leading up to the attack, stating they were standing when the gunfire started. “He moved to protect me because he wanted to stay near me,” she said.

The husband and wife were both survivors of the Holocaust, having endured immense hardship in their childhood. They had later immigrated to Australia from Eastern Europe.

Dan Elkayam

The French authorities have confirmed that French man Dan Elkayam is among the dead.

Publicly, a senior official said that France stood with his family and loved ones, the Jewish community, and the Australian people.

“This cowardly attack is a fresh and tragic example of a disgusting rise of antisemitic hatred that we must put a stop to,” the message read.

One Child

A 10-year-old girl who was rushed to the a children's hospital succumbed to her injuries, authorities stated.

One Israeli Citizen

An Israeli citizen was among those killed in the incident, as per multiple sources referencing the Israeli government.

Those Injured

From the 42 people taken to hospital, a significant number remain receiving treatment, with five in serious condition. Those hurt include two officers who responded to the attack.

A casualty is a member of the public who attempted to intervene to confront one of the gunmen. Hailed as a hero, he sustained bullet wounds but is expected to recover in hospital.

Arsen Ostrovsky

One of those wounded is Arsen Ostrovsky, a community leader. It has been reported he was injured and is receiving treatment in hospital.

In a message, he recounted the scene as an “utter carnage,” but also noted the response of those who came to assist. He stated he felt it was a “miracle” he survived.

Evan Zlatkis

Evan Zlatkis, a community director, was another casualty in the attack. He told reporters he heard “a large number” of shots.

“I thought it was rubber bullets, but it’s gone into my own skin and into my leg,” he stated. “I sustained a gunshot wound. They bandaged me up. I’m ok.”
