Space Traveler Reveals Depression Following ‘Tsunami of Backlash Post-Spaceflight

A pioneering space traveler has publicly detailed her battle with depression after facing a “tsunami of harassment” in the aftermath of a historic all-female space mission.

The 34-year-old activist – celebrated as a researcher and activist – was part of the 11-minute suborbital flight earlier this year, which also included well-known figures.

The mission was widely scrutinized by some, who cited its expense and environmental footprint.

Reflecting on the situation, Ms. Nguyen, who was celebrated as the pioneer for her community, stated the intense backlash eclipsed her moment under an torrent of sexist abuse.

“I said the emotional pain might endure for years,” Ms. Nguyen stated in a online statement, describing a supportive conversation from a fellow crew member in the period after the journey.

She described the news reports and online discourse as an unprecedented psychological assault.

“Stuck in Texas, I spent a week unable to rise from my bed,” she wrote. “A month later… I had to hang up… because I could not speak through my tears.”

Eclipsed by Backlash

The researcher, who has focused her career on women's health research and operated research during the flight, said all her lifelong efforts – from her scientific research and years of training to the personal milestone of her roots – was drowned out under the avalanche of misogyny.

She is best known for her tireless campaigning fighting for justice for victims of sexual violence.

Her own goal of reaching space was paused after surviving a rape during her college days, leading to a years-long quest for justice.

Finding Solid Ground

In the time since achieving her goal, she reports that the deepest pain is gradually receding, and she acknowledged the well-wishers whose support pulled her through. “You all saved me,” she wrote.

She added that amid the criticism, significant positive outcomes had emerged from the experience, such as spotlight on her women's health research and new advocacy opportunities.

The Historic Journey

The fully automated spacecraft launched from Texas in April, carrying the historic roster on a short trip that passed the Kármán line of outer space.

The team of pioneers also featured accomplished professionals from various fields.
