Putin Assures Steady Crude Oil Shipments to India in Rebuff of US Demands

During a unambiguous message to the United States, Leader Vladimir Putin informed Prime Minister Narendra Modi that Russia is prepared to guarantee “unbroken” supplies of crude oil to India. These remarks came as the two leaders met in New Delhi and declared their bilateral ties were “immune to outside influence.”

A Signal Aimed at the Western Countries

This affirmation, issued after the annual summit, appeared to be targeted at the United States and its allies, who have tried to urge New Delhi into curtailing its longstanding ties with Moscow. The backdrop follows earlier Washington's moves, notably additional import duties targeting New Delhi because of its buying of discounted Russian crude.

“Russia is a dependable exporter of energy resources and anything needed for the development of India’s energy sector,” he stated. “Russia is prepared to persist in securing the uninterrupted supply of fuel for the fast-expanding Indian economy.”

Modi, though he did not mentioning oil directly, reinforced the sentiment by noting that “a stable energy base has been a strong and vital pillar of the India-Russia cooperation.”

Defying Washington's Stance

Prior to the talks, via a media interview, Putin had challenged Washington's stance over India's energy purchases. He argued, “When Washington has the right to buy our nuclear fuel, how can you deny India enjoy the identical right?”

Putin's arrival represented his maiden trip to India after the start of the conflict in Ukraine, and Moscow and Delhi engaged in a clear show to demonstrate that the bond between the heads of state was undisturbed.

A Warm Greeting

Taking an notable move, Prime Minister Modi met Putin right off the plane. Both leaders exchanged a hearty embrace as old friends before holding a one-on-one meal together.

He referred to India's alliance with Russia as “a guiding star” and said it was “built on reciprocal esteem and profound confidence.”

Strengthening Bilateral Ties

The meeting produced several key agreements in the fields of defence and trade relations. One significant result was the completion of an economic cooperation programme extending until 2030, which targets to double bilateral trade to one hundred billion dollars each year by the target year.

The leaders also vowed to restructure their defence ties. While Russia continues to be India's biggest exporter of arms, the volume has declined lately as India has sought diversify its procurement.

The official release highlighted cooperation in the joint production of cutting-edge military systems, even if explicit mention of deals for the fifth-generation aircraft were omitted.

Overall, Russia and India affirmed that during the “present intricate, strained, and unpredictable geopolitical situation, Russian-Indian ties continue to be strong to foreign influence.”
