There are "no arrangements" for US President President Trump to confer with Russia's Vladimir Putin "in the near term", a White House official has declared.

Recently the US president said he and the Kremlin leader would meet in Budapest within two weeks to examine the ongoing hostilities.

A planning session between US Secretary of State Secretary Rubio and his opposite number Foreign Minister Lavrov was planned for recently - but the White House clarified the two had had a "positive" conversation and that a face-to-face session was no longer "needed".

The administration did not share further information on the reason the negotiations had been delayed.

Earlier Events

Trump had discussed a Hungarian meeting via telephone with the Russian leader, a day before meeting Ukraine's President Zelensky in the White House.

Various sources suggested his talks with Zelensky had been a "contentious discussion", with insiders claiming the president had pushed him to give up extensive regions of Ukraine's east as part of a agreement with Moscow.

However, on this week Trump endorsed a peace initiative backed by Kyiv and EU officials to halt the conflict on the existing battle lines.

"Leave it as is in its current state," he remarked.

Russia has frequently resisted against halting the current line of contact.

The Russian government was exclusively seeking "long-term, sustainable peace", Russia's foreign minister stated on Tuesday, implying that halting hostilities would merely represent a short-term truce.

Negotiating Stances

The "root causes" of the conflict required resolution, the Russian diplomat said, using Kremlin shorthand for a range of extensive requirements that encompass the recognition of total Russian authority over the Donbas as well as the demilitarisation of the country – a non-starter for Ukraine and its EU supporters.

Zelensky stated conversations concerning the front line were the "commencement of dialogue" but that Moscow was "taking all measures" to evade negotiations.

He additionally stated the exclusive issue that could cause Russia to "take notice" was that of the delivery of extended-range arms to the Ukrainian military.

Weapons Discussions

The Russian president's unscheduled call with the US leader recently preceded rumors that the US was preparing to send distance-capable weapons to Ukraine that could possibly hit deep into Russia.

The Ukrainian leader stated it was the Tomahawks issue that had compelled Moscow to enter into dialogue. The conversation concerning the weapons systems had proven to be a "valuable contribution" in negotiations", he commented.
