New Year's Revelers Advised to Wrap Up Warm with Snow Forecast Across the UK
Forecasters have indicated a frosty beginning to the new year, with wintry precipitation expected throughout a lot of the UK. Celebrants have been told to wrap up as near-freezing temperatures are expected for New Year's Eve.
Celebratory Celebrations Go Ahead Amid Warnings
The Scottish capital's renowned Hogmanay festivities are set to go ahead, following last year's postponement. This is in spite of advisories for snow in northern Scotland.
"A cold New Year's Eve night for those who are celebrating, so warmer clothes will be essential," said the weather service.
Displays Under Mostly Clear but Chilly Skies
Across the UK, the weather is expected to be perfect for fireworks shows, with no rain and clear skies. Temperatures are forecast to be cold, so warm wraps vital, according to forecasters.
Further north, skies will be cloudier, but this is not expected to impact visibility for viewing fireworks. "We are not looking at low cloud, mist or murk, so you ought to be able to see fireworks, just not stars," added one forecaster.
Extensive Weather Alerts for New Year's Day
Moving into Friday, snow alerts are active across Northern Ireland and from Wales, over the north-west, the West Midlands and through to London and most of the south-east of England.

- Travelers are advised to leave additional time for trips on the road.
- Delays and cancellations are anticipated on trains and buses.
Temperatures Set to Drop Further
With the start of 2026, it will be "frosty everywhere where you are," commented forecaster Simon Partridge. Conditions are set to fall even more as wintry showers and strong winds are expected to hit the north of the country.
Approximately 10cm of snow could accumulate to have settled in some areas by Friday morning, potentially hitting 30cm on the most elevated routes and peaks.
Health Alerts Issued
In addition, amber cold health alerts are in force for the north-east and north-west of England. These are due to continue until noon on 5 January, with temperatures likely to fall to between 3C and 5C.
The health agency stated this signified the weather was likely to cause major effects across the NHS and care systems. This includes a potential rise in the fatality numbers among the elderly or unwell or those 65 and older.
The message for all is clear: to welcome the new year in security, dressing for the cold is absolutely key.
