A uniquely yellow-fronted residential building visible behind assisted us locate the video.
Our team is checking images and video shared earlier today that purport to show the scene of a reported vehicle-borne explosive blast that authorities in Russia say fatally injured a senior military officer in Moscow.
Russian authorities confirmed that Lt Gen Fanil Sarvarov was inside the car that exploded and that he later died of his injuries. An investigation is under way.
The initial step to verify the location from which the images were from relied on posts saying the explosion happened on Yasenevaya Ulitsa in the southern part of the Russian capital.
Our analysis employed panoramic mapping services on Google Maps and the local mapping service Yandex to corroborate the distinctive yellow colour of a nearby residential complex captured in the video.
Identifying other structures, lamp-posts and the street layout verified the exact location the pictures were taken.
Additionally, we verified that the video clips were new and that the images had not been digital alteration.
