Jets Coach Aaron Glenn Optimistic Kris Boyd Will Make a Full Recovery After New York City Incident

Jets head coach Aaron Glenn mentioned that he has been in contact with defensive back Kris Boyd and feels certain the player will recover well after suffering a gunshot wound in midtown Manhattan early Sunday morning.

Glenn described that Boyd, who is hospitalized, was “in good spirits” during a recent discussion.

“That’s what eases my mind, is that he’s in good spirits,” Glenn said Wednesday. “His family, they are holding up and he will come through this without issue.”

The coach did not know when Boyd would leave the hospital, where he is reported as critical but stable.

“Still unsure,” the coach said. “But I will say this, hearing him speak, he felt really upbeat. And again, that reassures me, that he feels like that and he expresses himself so positively.”

Authorities shared security footage earlier this week of a man sought in the shooting of Boyd. What prompted the attack remains under investigation and officials stated it is unknown if Boyd was targeted. No other injuries were reported.

The attack took place in the early morning on Sunday morning about halfway between the famous arena and Times Square. Boyd, 29, was transported to a local hospital after being shot in the abdomen, as reported. The assailant escaped.

Glenn mentioned Boyd has been on his mind “constantly” since the news broke. He further stated that Boyd and his wife recently welcomed a newborn.

“The first thing I thought about, he recently became a father,” Glenn said. “And I’m thinking about his wife, worrying about his newborn and I want to make sure that he’s OK. Those thoughts dominated my thinking.
“There’s a process to this, which I won’t get into, but It is reassuring that he’s going to come out of this thing really, really well.”

Boyd hasn’t played in the present campaign, his first with the Jets, after his season was cut short due to injury on mid-August with a shoulder issue that required surgery.

Boyd came to New York as a free agent in spring and was projected as a significant contributor of a revamped special teams unit under the coach and ST coordinator the special teams coach. However, he got hurt during a training camp practice on 2 August and was carted from the field.

Boyd continued to be present during the entire campaign while healing from his surgery.

“He’s been a part of what we’re doing,” Glenn stated. “Certainly, he attends every game. He’s fully engaged. Given his status as a special teams standout, he has excelled at supporting his teammates.”

Boyd, a Texas native, played his first four seasons with Minnesota after getting drafted in the seventh round by Minnesota out of UT in the 2019 draft. He later played for Arizona in last year and later was with the Texans later that season. Boyd inked a single-season agreement valued at $1.6 million with New York in the spring.
