Enduring Chill in the Deep Minus Forties
Similarly, the communities of Mayo and Dawson experienced 16 consecutive nights colder than minus 40 degrees, with Mayo experiencing a low of -50.4C at the start of the week. The capital, Whitehorse, likewise saw a series of ten nights when readings fell to minus 30 degrees or lower.
The deep freeze spread farther south during the holiday season. On Christmas Day, overnight temperatures in Edmonton fell below -28C.
December 26th was anticipated to usher in lows of at least -20C through a wide swath, encompassing cities from Edmonton to Quebec.

The frigid conditions are predicted to linger for the foreseeable future. Officials have warned that the Yukon could face electricity outages soon, as the system endures record-high pressure from peak power usage levels.
The lengthy cold snap originates from the polar vortex remaining anchored over Canada for much of December, enabling a surge of icy Arctic winds to descend. The frigid dome is projected to gradually withdraw north gradually, enabling milder Pacific air to move across the US and into parts of southern Canada.

Several states set Christmas Day temperature records. The capital of Oklahoma soared to 25C on Christmas Day, exceeding the old record of 22C from 1982. Metropolitan areas such as Austin, Dallas, and Charlotte also logged readings above 25 degrees Celsius.

Warmer-than-normal conditions are forecast to last for the remainder of the week and beyond, with abnormal warmth projected to move across the southeastern US in the coming days.
This heat is being driven by a powerful high-altitude ridge stretching from the southwestern deserts northward and eastward, establishing a classic heat-dome pattern. Such a configuration results in a widespread high-pressure system over a large portion of North America, effectively capping warm air at lower altitudes. Descending air compresses and adiabatically warms, allowing unusually warm temperatures to build.
