Anthony Barry Shares The Philosophy: The England Jersey Should Feel Like a Cape, Not Body Armour.
In the past, Barry featured in League Two. Currently, his attention is fixed supporting Thomas Tuchel win the World Cup in the upcoming tournament. His journey from the pitch to the sidelines began with a voluntary role coaching youngsters. Barry reflects, “It was in the evenings, third of a pitch, asked to do 11 v 11 … flat balls, not enough bibs,” and he fell in love with it. He realized his purpose.
Rapid Rise
The coach's journey is incredible. Beginning with his first major job, he built a standing for innovative drills and strong interpersonal abilities. His stints with teams led him to Chelsea and Bayern Munich, while also serving in coaching jobs abroad with the Republic of Ireland, Belgium, and Portugal. His players include legends including world-class talents. Today, as part of Team England, it's all-consuming, the peak as he describes it.
“All begins with a vision … However, I hold that passion overcomes challenges. You have the dream but then you bring it down: ‘How do we do it, each day, each phase?’ We aim for World Cup victory. However, vision doesn't suffice. We must create a methodical process enabling us to have the best chance.”
Detail-Oriented Approach
Dedication, focusing on tiny aspects, characterizes his journey. Toiling around the clock all the time, they both challenge limits. Their methods feature psychological profiling, a strategy for high temperatures ahead of the tournament in North America, and creating a unified squad. He stresses the England collective and avoids language like “international break”.
“This isn't a vacation or a break,” Barry says. “It was vital to establish a setup that the players want to be part of and where they're challenged that returning to club duty feels easier.”
Ambitious Trainers
Barry describes himself and Tuchel as “very greedy”. “Our goal is to master every aspect of the game,” he declares. “We strive to own every metre of the pitch and we dedicate many of our days on. We must to not only anticipate of changes and to lead and innovate. This is continuous focused on finding solutions. And it’s to make the complex clear.
“We have 50 days together with the team prior to the World Cup. We have to play a sophisticated style that gives us a tactical advantage and we have to make it so clear in our 50 days with them. It’s to take it from concept to details to understanding to action.
“To create a system that allows us to be productive in that window, we must utilize all the time available from when we started. When the squad is away, we have to build relationships among them. We have to spend time communicating regularly, observing them live, understand them, connect with them. If we limit ourselves to that time, it's impossible.”
World Cup Qualifiers
Barry is preparing for the final pair for the World Cup preliminaries – versus Serbia in London and Albania in Tirana. The team has secured their place at the finals with six wins out of six with perfect defensive records. But there will be no easing off; quite the opposite. This period to strengthen the squad's character, for further momentum.
“The manager and I agree that our playing approach must reflect the best aspects of English football,” he comments. “The physicality, the adaptability, the strength, the honesty. The Three Lions kit should be harder than ever to get but light to wear. It ought to be like a superhero's cape and not body armour.
“To ensure it's effortless, we have to give them a system that lets them to play freely like they do every week, that resonates with them and encourages attacking play. They need to reduce hesitation and more in doing.
“You can gain psychological edges you can get as a coach at both ends of the pitch – building from the defense, attacking high up. Yet, in the central zone in that part of the ground, we believe play has stagnated, especially in England's top flight. Everybody has so much information currently. They know how to set up – defensive shapes. We are focusing to speed up play in that central area.”
Drive for Growth
The coach's thirst to get better knows no bounds. While training for the Uefa pro licence, he was worried over the speaking requirement, as his cohort contained luminaries such as Frank Lampard and Michael Carrick. So, to build his skill set, he entered difficult settings imaginable to improve his talks. Such as Walton jail locally, where he coached prisoners in a football drill.
He earned his license in 2020 at the top of the class, and his research paper – about dead-ball situations, where he studied numerous set-plays – became a published work. Lampard included impressed and he recruited the coach to his team at Stamford Bridge. After Lampard's dismissal, it said plenty that Chelsea removed virtually all of his coaches while keeping Barry.
Lampard’s successor at Stamford Bridge became Tuchel, within months, he and Barry won the Champions League. When Tuchel was dismissed, the coach continued under Graham Potter. But when Tuchel re-emerged in Germany, he recruited Barry of Chelsea and back alongside him. English football's governing body see them as a double act similar to Southgate and Holland.
