Adult Swim's Leading New Show of This Year Earns a Significant Renewal for Two More Seasons.
During the fall season, Adult Swim saw the return of its unconventional hit, Smiling Friends. But, shortly thereafter, the network unveiled a fresh animated series with a strikingly different tone. Haha, You Clowns emerged as gentle and comforting, in the spirit of a cartoon version of a serene talk show. During a period often defined by bleakness, this show's earnestness struck a chord and helped it become a surprise hit.
A Major Commitment
In mid-December, the network confirmed a big renewal: Haha, You Clowns has been picked up for two additional seasons. This provides creator Joe Cappa ample opportunity to further explore the story of the Campbell family. The series focuses on three well-mannered teenage brothers whose primary trait is their strong bond for their widowed father, with Cappa providing the voices for all four central characters.
"I am incredibly thankful to the audience of the show who gave *Haha, You Clowns* a chance and helped it grow," remarked Cappa. "I’m incredibly thrilled that I get to hang out at the Campbell household for seasons to come."
Executive Acclaim
In the same announcement commendation from Adult Swim president Michael Ouweleen, who called the series as "radically heartfelt and uniquely eerie." He specifically highlighted the fans who found the show and advocated for its distinctly quirky appeal.
"All of you got behind this new show, praised it on social media, and grew it week over week so we could approve not one, but two more seasons," commented Ouweleen. "As the show says: 'You are strong! You are loved!'"
A Wholesome Alternative
Earlier this fall, Haha, You Clowns was praised as "a comforting antidote" to other adult animated fare. It offers something surprisingly comfy about watching this charming family navigate their daily lives.
In earlier interviews, creator Joe Cappa expressed his desire to help comedy break out of its current layer of irony. He linked this trend to various cultural shifts.
“We're stuck in a cycle of irony that we can't get ourselves out of,” said Cappa. “The attitude is that we have to know we’re the cleverest viewer in the room when we're watching stuff. I feel like we've been doing this for too long, and we need to laugh at something different now. It's time for comedy to grow.”
What Comes Next
Given this two-season order, with Haha, You Clowns guaranteed to return, Cappa may well help usher in that change he described. If nothing else, the renewal guarantees audiences additional episodes to bask in the gentle humor of the endearing Campbell clan.
The first season's conclusion of Haha, You Clowns airs on December 21st. The entire series is available for streaming on HBO Max.
