Addressing the Store Clerk That Left Me Absolutely Without Words – Kudos to You
This occurred on a day of rest, and I felt grumpy enough, filling up my mum’s car. It was a typical gas station that also functions as a convenience store, meaning there's a chance of waiting behind shoppers with carts of pricey provisions. A terrible fate to happen when the sole aim is to pay for some fuel. Terrible.
My position was fourth in the queue. There was only employee working, a female attendant. There was something unusual about her. When the faffer at the front of the queue had finally paid for his Viakal, his sausage roll, and a carton of eggs, I was certain I heard the cashier tell him an excellent day. Strange. Could be I misunderstood, or possibly she uttered it and used a mocking tone. The thought crossed my mind if she might actually be a supporter in my fight against faff, reflecting my irritation for people who hold up people just getting gas like me.
Advancing next, becoming the third customer. The new leader of the queue completed her gasoline purchase with impressive quickness. Again, the phrase came: “Have a wonderful day.” In fact, it was “enjoy a truly great day”. An American? At this location? She had the accent, and few locals tells people a wonderful day, or even just a nice day. Highly unusual. It's uncommon to find people from America visiting this town, and definitely not holding jobs in fueling spots or elsewhere.
Second in line at last. After an elderly lady dealing with a right old battle with her basket, her food items, her purse and her rewards card. It went on for ever. Once completed, the woman also was wished to have a fantastic day. Definitely from the US. Confirming it was possible by cracking a joke in her direction, to see if she did that reaction when they look at you, without a smile, and state very earnestly: “That is quite humorous.” But I couldn’t think of anything hilarious to utter.
Ultimately, I accepted the heartfelt tone – or a mimicry of sincerity, that equates to the same thing – while she stared directly into my eyes, deep into my soul, and bid me an awesome day. My spirits lifted. It was a good thing.
